What is the Jubilee Year?

The Jubilee has its origins in an ancient biblical tradition, which is proclaimed in the Book of Leviticus (Lev. 25).  The 50^th year is a “sabbath of sabbaths”, a year for releasing slaves, forgiving debts, and allowing the land to rest.  In our Christian tradition the Jubilee has always had a strong focus on reconciliation and renewal, and on liberating the oppressed. In identifying this Jubilee year with the theme of hope, Pope Francis seems to be picking up on a deeply rooted desire in all our hearts. As Christians, it will be our mission in the year ahead, and for many years to come, to offer to one another and to the world a hope which is stronger than all the negativity and which extends beyond mere optimism; a hope that is rooted in the person of Jesus.
